Web editor (full-time 8-month contract)

The Toronto Star is seeking an experienced web editor to join a large and busy team running thestar.com.

This is a contract position, to start as soon as possible and to finish on June 30, 2009.

Duties include:

·       Selecting, editing, enhancing and publishing content
·       Building special pages and sections
·       Maintaining some site code and functionality (via a content management system)

 
You'll need:
·       A degree in journalism or equivalent experience
·       Fast and accurate editing skills - both text and pictures (using Photoshop)
·       A wide range of interests and an in-depth knowledge of Toronto and the GTA
·       Superb news judgment
·       Enthusiasm for online news
·       Experience with online publishing systems

Skills in HTML, CSS, multimedia production, databases, and/or use of 3rd party APIs would be an advantage.

This position is based in our downtown Toronto newsroom. It involves shift-work and is likely to include some weekends.

Responsibilities:    Reporting to the Executive Producer, the Sr. Manager, Digital, is responsible for the hands on planning, design, implementation and management of news, features, content and multimedia assets on the CTVOlympics.ca portal for the Vancouver 2010 and 2012 Olympic games.

•    sets editorial direction relative to sports coverage and content creation on the portal
•    develops feature content ideas based on the Games schedules, World Cup schedules, and other relevant sources of information, and manages assignment of content development to the production team
•    recruits and manages the digital team, ensuring that all website content (sports or other) is completely up to date, comprehensive and available on the website in a timely manner
•    manages the integration of multimedia assets into the website
•    builds and manages other content creation relationships to ensure the timely creation, translation and implementation of original content into both languages of the website
•    schedules the sport production team to deliver immediate coverage of all sport events during the World Cup season and Olympic Winter Games
•    works with the Executive Producer and the Consortium’s development agency to document and finalize the website information architecture, functional requirements, wireframes and design
•    participates in operational planning, recruitment, scheduling and management in preparation for and during the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games
•    functions as the Senior Home Page Producer for the website, prioritizing website content on the home page based on content relevance, popularity and audience
•    provides regular statistical analysis of website traffic and content consumption, suggesting changes to increase usability and audience on the website
•    other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:    •    a passion for sport and the Olympic and Paralympic Games
•    at least 5 years as the Home Page or Senior Producer of a major news, entertainment or sports portal
•    in-depth knowledge and experience developing multimedia assets for a major news and information portal
•    in-depth knowledge of online streaming media (live and on demand) and its application within a news and sports portal
•    a motivated self-starter, experienced working in high pressure and fluid environments
•    education and/or work experience as a journalist or media producer
•    experience working with a content management system to manage a website and its content
•    experience managing a bilingual website an asset
•    practical knowledge of the written French language desirable
